WESTFIELD, Mass., September 12, 2013- For the second year in a row, Westfield State University has been named to the fifth-annual Top Military Friendly School list. The 2014 Military Friendly School list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military services members, veterans, and spouses as students to ensure their success.
“Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows Westfield State University’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, vice president at Victory Media and a nine-year Navy veteran. “The need for education is growing and our mission is to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools.”
“Making it on this list for the second year in a row shows evidence that Westfield State is continuing to support and provide service for the military and veterans on this campus, and we will continue to do so,” said Will LaFever, Veteran & Military Services Coordinator. “We’ve seen a 20% increase in veterans on campus since being named to this list since last year, and we expect that this is the start of a long trend.”
Being named a Top Military Friendly school is not the first recognition for veteran services for Westfield State University. This past May, Westfield State University was ranked as one of the top business schools for veterans in the first ever national survey of business schools by Military Times, a weekly newspaper serving all branches of the U.S. military, the global defense community, the U.S. federal government, and several special interest, defense-oriented industry sectors.
In addition, beginning in August 2013, Westfield State University increased its tuition assistance for eligible veterans under the Yellow Ribbon Program. Under the Yellow Ribbon Program, the University and the Veterans Administration (VA) have agreed to split the cost of tuition for out-of-state student veterans using post-9/11 GI bill benefits at the 100 percent level, a savings of $3,500 per semester.
In the beginning of this fall semester, all veteran students and faculty were invited to a special on-campus Welcome Back Barbecue, hosted by LaFever.
"We appreciate and value our veterans' service to our country,” said University President, Evan Dobelle. “Westfield State will always seize every opportunity to improve veteran benefits and to acknowledge the unique experiences and perspectives our veterans bring to campus life.”
